Full Figured Fashion Week NYC 2011

New York City was all about the curves for Full Figured Fashion Week.

Presented by Sonsi and sponsored by famed retailers Lane Bryant and Kmart, FFFWeek ran from Wednesday June 16th through Saturday June 18th ending with a grand finale showcase featuring fifteen of the top designers in the plus size world.

In its third year, FFFWeek featured four days packed with events to showcase and emphasized the beauty of the curvaceous form. The event, created by former plus model turned fashion show producer, Gwen DeVoe, drew bloggers, designers, fashionistas and everyone in between to experience panel discussions, shopping soirees, parties and fashion showcases that celebrated the full figured woman.

Though some of the scheduled events like the Blogger’s Conference and Brunch panel were invite only, the public events like the All-White Boat Party, the Sample Sale and the Full-Figured Fashion Crawl attracted women from all over the tri-state area and the world– giving women an opportunity to shop for summer and fall fashions at event-only discounted prices.

I had the pleasure of attending the much anticipated Lane Bryant Blogger Conference as well as the Kmart Blogger’s Brunch. It was a great opportunity for me to network and meet some of the faces behind the blogs and Twitter feeds I follow including Maddy Figueroa-Jones of Plus Model MagazineMarie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, Olga Gonzalez-Ramos of Daily Venus Diva, Karen Ward of the Curvy Canadian, Kim McCarter of The Curvy Spot, Yoli Ramirez of Queen Diva Fashion, Glen Johnson of Full Figure Plus, Alissa Wilson of Stylish Curves, Thina Grotmark of Beyond Sizes (she came all the way from Sweden!), Trinia Dotson of Curvy Girl Radio, Tina McNeely from T Minus T Plus, and so many more.

At the Lane Bryant conference, attendees got to see the new collections hitting the stores for pre-fall and fall including a limited edition Swarovski Crystal bra set for Cacique (see pic below). The new collections feature fashion inspirations from famed designers including Pierre Cardin, Halston and Fiorucci.

We also got a sneek preview of the incredibly sexy new ad campaign for Lane Bryant’s T3 (Tummy Tightening Technology) Jeans which are hitting stores now. Definitely something I want to check out as they promise no more unsightly gaps as well as all over smoothing that makes you appear to be two sizes smaller!

Saturday’s Blogger Brunch, sponsored by Kmart, also served as the unveiling of LYS, the retailer’s new in-house plus line. The new collection features fun, flirty fashions….all under $50! Debuting with sizes 18-24, the cheap but chic pieces are a curvy girl’s dream.

But the highlight of my FFFWeek this year was being backstage at the finale showcase on Saturday evening. Working with the team from The Art of Curves, headed by Blacque Sutherland and Nova, and the staff of DeVoe Signature Events, an amazing show was put on featuring 36 of the most beautiful curvy girls in the fashion industry including the famed Jeannie Ferguson, Tricia Campbell and more. Featured designers included: Plush Boutique, Ashaki Charles, Le Dan’s Closet, Jill Alexander, Sonsi, Kmart, Lane Bryant, Queen Grace, Her Game 2, Sweetooth, Ashley Stewart and Margaux Kouture. The show was hosted by Shanda Freeman and included a tribute to the late Mia Amber, who was presented with the Plus Runway Model of the Year award (accepted by her husband).

Richard Lew Photography took some amazing shots of the show, including this one:

SOME NEW THINGS FOR THE CURVY SOCIALITE

I’ve been thinking long and hard over the last few weeks about the direction I want to take the Curvy Socialite in. One of the ideas that seem to keep coming back to mind (and something that has been suggested by a few others who I have spoken to) was to take on a little more of a magazine feel to the blog. NO I AM NOT TURNING CURVY SOCIALITE INTO A MAGAZINE. But rather, I will look into incorporating some aspects of a magazine format into my blog. So with that said, here are some of the new features that will be coming up in the near future:

  • Industry Insiders: Interviews with curvy girls doing their thing in various industries (fashion, entertainment, beauty, politics, etc).
  • Fashion Reviews (shows, new collections, etc)
  • Beauty Reviews (products, trends, etc)

These are just some of the ideas that I will be incorporating over time, but one of the biggest changes, will be the introduction of guest contributors! Some of them will be well known personalities in the curvy world and others will be those making names for themselves in other capacities. Debuting this month with some of the New York Fashion Week coverage, I’ve enlisted the help of contributors including:

Let me know what you think of these new ideas and I am also open to suggestions. Share your thoughts either here or by sending me a personal email at thecurvysocialite@gmail.com.

Thanks!
