“DARE” TO BE BOLD: New Plus Magazine Launches with Spring Issue

Okay. Okay. I can here some of you muttering under your breath already with, “not another one.” This isn’t the first nor will it be the last plus magazine that will burst on to the market but I have to say I’m hoping Dare Magazine will be one that will stay.

DARE Magazine

What’s so special about Dare?

Well, it’s founder, Diana Di Poce, a senior at Ryerson University in Canada, is looking do something that her predecessors did not.  She’s NOT trying to change the world or “rally the troops” so to speak like others of her generation and even other magazine before her. Rather she’s trying to provide a source of inspiration for curvy girls throughout Canada and beyond. Geared toward the woman size 12 and above, her purpose of the magazine is to acknowledge and inspire the woman with the fuller figure and all women in general of all shapes and sizes.

In a recent interview, Di Poce said, “I wanted to keep it more general in the way that any woman can look at the magazine and get inspiration from it…just like how I pick up an issue of Elle or Flare…even though I won’t fit these outfits and I won’t look like these models, I still get inspiration from it.”

Born of her final school project, the Fashion Communications major picked the ideal time to launch with the burgeoning acknowledgement plus size women are receiving from the fashion and beauty industry– though there are still some brands that are dead set against anyone over a size 8 wearing their clothing (let’s not even talk about the Abercrombie founder’s comments about not wanting “fat” or “ugly” people wearing his clothes. It’s his prerogative at the end of the day; the public’s choice whether or not to support. If you want to read the story for yourself, click here.)

I’m looking to see more and what the direction the magazine will take. But for now, it is piquing my interest and I am throwing in my support.

RED CARPET STYLE: 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

During awards season, another weekend means another awards show. This past weekend, Hollywood feted their shining stars at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

So who scored big in the style department?

There were a few “blue belles” making grand entrances in navy including Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen, Nicole Kidman in Vivienne Westwood and Jennifer Lawrence (now infamous) and Marion Cotillard both in Dior Couture.

Looking chic and sophisticated in classic black were Claire Danes in Givenchy, Naya Rivera in Donna Karan Atelier and making an artistic statement on the carpet, January Jones in Prabal Gurung.

Someone once said a redhead shouldn’t wear red. We’re glad the ginger haired Jessica Chastain didn’t take that advice. She looked ravishing in a red Alexander McQueen.

Kerry Washington (in Rodarte) and Sofia Vegara in Donna Karan were beautiful in winter white.

Other red carpet notables… Viola Davis in a teal Monique Lhuillier and Olympic Gold Medalist Gabrielle Douglas in a cute blue cocktail dress.

POLITICAL FASHION: A New York State of Mind at the 2013 Inaugural Balls

It seems that it was definitely a “New York State of Mind” with the inaugural ball fashion.

First Lady Michelle Obama was a “Lady in Red” last night in a custom-made gown by New York designer Jason Wu.

The “Big Apple” red colored chiffon and velvet gown (paired with a handmade diamond jewelry designer Kimberly Mc Donald and shoes by Jimmy Choo) is a follow up to the white gown by Wu that Mrs. Obama wore in 2009 at the President’s first Inaugural Ball—propelling the Manhattan-based designer to a household name. The gorgeous red dress was the only one Jason Wu submitted for the First Lady’s consideration. He collaborated with McDonald on the jeweled neckline—made of real diamonds.

The Obamas made their first appearance at the Commander-in-Chief Ball, honoring the members of the Armed Forces. There the First Couple was serenaded by Jennifer Hudson. The songstress, dressed in a classic black mermaid style gown, sang a lively rendition of the Al Green classic, “Let’s Stay Together.”

Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the Vice President, was a vision in blue in a gown by another New York designer, Vera Wang. The dapper Bidens were serenaded by singer and actor Jamie Foxx’s rendition of the Ray Charles classic “I Can’t Stop Loving You.”

Also donning red last night was singer, Alicia Keys who wore a Michael Kors (another New York designer) gown with an open back for her performance at last night’s event.

At the end of the inaugural festivities, the first lady’s outfits and accompanying accessories will go to the National Archives.

POLITICAL FASHION: The 57th Presidential Inauguration

First Lady Michelle Obama’s new haircut (the beauty world all agrees that bangs suit her perfectly) was definitely a trending topic for the past few days, but today everyone is talking about the fabulous custom Thom Browne coat she sported at the public swearing in ceremony, Mrs. Obama added a little flair and showed off her curves with an ornate belt by J Crew (seems to be her favorite retailer). Under that fabulous designer coat, the First Lady donned a Thom Browne dress and Reed Krakoff cardigan for the afternoon festivities.

Not outshining their mom, the First Daughters looked amazing (and age appropriate) in their purple wool coats. Malia, the elder of the Obama girls, rocked a plum J Crew coat while little sister, Sasha, sported a lilac Kate Spade coat. These two are definitely following in their mom’s footsteps as fashionistas in training.

The Obamas and the crowds assembled were serenaded by some stylish ladies today including King Bey who se moving rendition of the National Anthem had many in the crowd near tears. Beyonce arrived with her husband (Jay Z) in a Christian Dior coat which she removed revealing an amazing Pucci gown while she performed.

Now the fashion world waits to see who will be the designer to dress the First Lady for tonight’s inaugural balls.
